Race Day
Race day doesn’t have to mean keeping kids on the sidelines. While Ironman athletes take on the course, families will find plenty of ways to stay entertained, comfortable, and close to the action, with activities that balance playtime, exploration, and cheering throughout the day. With so many nearby, family-friendly options, it’s easy to follow the race at your own pace while keeping kids happy, engaged, and part of the excitement.
If you’re watching little ones while a family member or friend is racing, Riverfront Park offers plenty of kid-friendly activities to keep everyone entertained. The riverside playground and splash pad are always a hit, and the historic Salem Riverfront Carousel adds a touch of magic. The Gilbert House Children’s Museum is another excellent destination for indoor and outdoor creative play, where kids can easily spend an entire day exploring its 16 hands-on exhibits and the 20,000-square-foot Outdoor Discovery Area, inspired by A.C. Gilbert—the inventor of the Erector Set and the museum’s namesake.
Nearby, “Let’s All Play” is a beloved community playground featuring adaptive play equipment designed for all abilities. Spectators can also enjoy the Willamette Heritage Center, where you’ll find engaging exhibits about Oregon history, woolen mill demonstrations, and plenty of ducks to feed. When you’re ready for a treat, Bentley’s serves seasonal coffees and specialty drinks for kids, including the popular Cotton Candy Milkshake, and even offers pet-friendly goodies. For a lactose-free delight, try Dreamies Creamery, a women-owned business making ice-cream from sheep’s milk. Creativitee & Rofe Designs and Create A Memory offer a creative break, with hands-on studios where kids and adults alike can design a custom T-shirt or piece of pottery to commemorate race weekend. (Shipping is available if needed).
Another fun option for a little friendly competition is mini golf at Best Little Roadhouse, which has a playful course and a welcoming atmosphere for families. And of course, don’t forget to bring your signs and cheer on your Ironman family as they race through the downtown area on the bike course.
